Science:Physical properties of materials can be changed by exposure to water, heat, light, or by cutting, mixing, and grinding. (2a)
Science: The properties of some materials influence their use. Some materials may be more suitable for making a particular product or device. (2e)
ELA: With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question. (CC1W8)
NETS-S
Identify, research, and collect data on an environmental issue using digital resources and propose a developmentally appropriate solution. (1, 3, 4)
Demonstrate the ability to navigate in virtual environments such as electronic books, simulation software, and websites. (6)
Instructional Objective: Students will evaluate the different playground equipment to determine if it suitable for the different weather conditions we experience during the year.
Action
Before-Class Participation: Reserve the computer lab. Bookmark sites for playground equipment. Display learning maps from earth day lesson and ways to help the Earth along with the proposed list of equipment for the new playground.

Review the list of equipment that was created for the new playground and the importance of having a green playground. Go over rubric for this portion of the project.
Show the class different pictures of playgrounds that have been made from recycled materials. Discuss how the weather may affect the equipment.
Students use the information recorded on the graphic organizer under weather to determine if the equipment selected meets our criteria. If they need more information, they can revisit websites to find more information on suitable weather conditions for the equipment they selected.
Students will identify the equipment that are a good fit for our environment (type of material, suitable weather, and how long it will last) and begin organizing their facts for the presentation.

Ongoing Assessment: Through observations pay attention to student participation and how well they work together. If any group is having trouble with the task completion or working together, redirect their focus to the goal of the assignment. Record observations on a student checklist. Also, check for understanding by reviewing their notes on the different equipment. Did their findings match the criteria?
Accommodations: An FM system will be used for my students with hearing loss. For my students that have trouble staying on task, they will be given a checklist that will help them stay focused on what they’re supposed to be looking for. Hard copies of the materials will be available for those that wish to use paper/pencil method.
Back-up plan: In the event there is a problem with technology, I will have hard copies or brochures from the different company websites. Students can use their journals to record their research.
Evaluation
Lesson Reflections and Notes: This lesson is scheduled for 2 class periods. Did students have hard time finding the necessary information to aide in their decision making? Are the groups effective? Are there any student that needs more guidance and support from the teacher?
